A chunk of the Wilkins ice shelf 7 times the size of Manhattan began collapsing almost a month ago. Scientists say the melting of the shelf is another sign of global warming, as temperatures have risen dramatically in Antarctica over the last 50 years. The collapse of the shelf is also a concern because it acts as a buttress for continental ice, which will erode more quickly and lead to rising sea level without the buffer.

Global Warming = Fraud.
How does the ice shelf hold back land based ice? It’s not secured against anything. Surely if there was any pressure on it it would just float out to sea?

Military v. climate security: U.S. and China worlds apart
.
While China has built a network of trains zipping 200 mph between urban centres, the U.S. dithers over one proposed high-speed rail line in California. Can America ever catch up on green investing? Yes, says one researcher. But it means taking $100 billion out of the defense budget annually.

Climategate Part 2 – Patrick Michaels, a global warming skeptic from the Cato Institute, testified that he only received 3% of his $4.2 million funding from the oil industry. In fact the total is more than 40%, much of it from the Koch Brothers, bankrollers of the tea party movement. Michaels is now under investigation for lying to Congress. The oil, gas and coal industry has been blocking legislation to save our planet since the 70s.
The ice sheet isn’t the only thing that has just collapsed -

Funny how back in 2008 all the presidential candidates wanted to so something about it, but here in 2011 nothing has been done. hmmmm
I wonder if my species will survibe another 50 years
stop sending those plane to that area and land those plane on those area to prevent those ice sheet spilt.
Given that temperatures in the antarctic rarely get above freezing, I think we can expect melting to be only a very minor factor in land ice-loss, which leaves evaporation (or ’sublimation’ to be precise) and wind-erosion as the main factors. On the other side of the equation, precipitation will be the main factor determining ice-gain and that will be dependent primarily on weather-patterns and only indirectly (i.e. to a very small extent) on the global mean temperature.
@rietveen26 What makes you certain that antarctic land ice is melting? It depends on the time period over which we are measuring it. There may be short-term decreases that are replaced by greater increases in the longer term, and vice versa. We are dealing with numerous intermixed cyclic variations here, whose amplitudes and periods are almost entirely unknown. In the end it all seems to me to come down to weather-patterns that determine ice-gains and losses on the antarctic land-mass.
@CombatMTv3 “you were told”, “they said”… were you ever told the difference between weather and climate? If not, why don’t you look it up. Amusing to see the usual “arguments” comparing compelling evidence compiled worldwide to religious belief in crap published on sensationalist website. There is a falsifiable scientific theory of AGW. There is no alternative, falsifiable scientific theory that explains the current warming.
Hey i was in Alaska this summer, and i was told their last winter was 3 degrees colder than average, and last time i checked 3 degrees is all it takes for a mini ice age. Which a lot of scientists have been saying we’re going into.
@hempartist420 there’s no stopping what’s coming. and as much as you want to make this about me, it still doesn’t exist as you think it does. everything happens in cycles. taxing people is their solution. it’s already been put into place. if you think that is a good thing, shame on you. we do need to do things differently concerning our allocation of resources, no doubt. but that has nothing to do with this bs. i think we’ll be okay, i’m not waking up anytime soon fearing the temperature.
@theblackmanOyeah of course the world didn’t end but a similar climate crisis happened about 180,000 years ago that decreased the human population to a few thousand and we almost joined the 99.8% of animals that have gone extinct. but I guess we should use ur logic and do as little as possible just in case we wont be affected. either way we need to change to renewable energy sources and stop our dependency on oil, and create new jobs in doing so, too bad we have useless people like u in the way
@hempartist420 you continue to imply that i’m saying the climate isn’t changing, or even heating. but it has nothing to do with people, and everything to do with the sun. what are we going to do, outlaw the sun? no, it’s easier to just make it everyone’s fault, and tax the morons who think they are doing something to “save the planet.”
the climate is always changing. that doesn’t matter. it’s been much hotter in the past, and clearly the world didn’t end. ice will eventually melt, big deal.
@theblackmanOyeah there is absolute empirical data to prove that the earth is warming, because it’s fucking WARMER than it used to be for one, along with time lapse FOOTAGE of ice shelves melting along with satellite photos of them breaking apart, those 30,000 skeptics aren’t debating whether climate change is happening or not, it is whether it is man-made or not because it’s an obvious FACT that the climate is changing… you fucking idiot
@hempartist420 30,000. thirty fucking thousand, in case you didn’t get that. those are just the ones suing these scamming pieces of shit. it’s going to be funny when it comes to be accepted that this was all made up, and that the believers were so because they weren’t smart enough to look at the factors of “climate change” for what they really are. the climate is always going to change. that doesnt mean the people should have govt step in and regulate their lives even more. get a clue, goddamn.
@theblackmanOyeah the debate is not about whether it is happening or not fucktard, it’s about whether it is man made or not, The effects of climate change are already happening and it is evident. you didn’t even give a real number you moron you might want to learn something about comma placement, even if that was true there are a shitload of scientists on the planet, and that would be a small minority… so the fuck what
@hempartist420 but you do? maybe you’ve never heard of climategate… these people botched the numbers, and made it look like global warming was real and detrimental to the planet, and that its sole cause was humans. it’s on record. if you think you know what you’re talking about AND you think that 99% of scientists believe in this scam, you are one contradicting fool.
there are about 30,00 scientists who would laugh in you face for such a ridiculous claim.
@theblackmanOy yes I have heard of carbon credits, and it’s funny how you don’t know what your talking about
@hempartist420 it’s only a matter of time if you don’t learn that this is a scam. if you’ve never heard of carbon credits, then i don’t think you have much room to call anyone an idiot.
@theblackmanOyeah and I don’t have to pay them dipshit… you’re a fucking idiot
@hempartist420 99%? saying that alone, shows your level of knowledge on the subject. carbon taxes already exist, numb nuts.
@theblackmanOyeah says the person on YT, however I will continue to believe the 99% of scientists that say otherwise, but maybe the giant corporations are just making the media (which they sponsor) create a giant conspiracy about climate change so the giant corporations can tax themselves… riiiight which btw I will not be paying stupid
