Revision-key for landing in a good MBA course: MBA experts

Tags: , , , ,

Sir I am a BCA graduate and want to do an MBA course further. Which is the upcoming entrance exam for getting into an MBA course? Is it MAT and if so which college should I go for an MBA course after getting my MAT results? Which amongst these have more importance CAT, MAT OR XAT? Please guide me (Priyanka , Goa) Dear Priyanka, amongst the various entrance exams, only MAT is held more than once a year. All other exams like CAT, XAT, IIFT etc. take place during the period November to January. For getting admission into top MBA college for an MBA course in India, you will need to write CAT, XAT, FMS, IIFT etc. entrance exams. Since most of the entrance exams require similar preparation, please do not restrict yourself to just one exam for getting into an MBA course. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi) Dear Sir, I am first year student of MBA course; my graduation background is engineering in electronics and communication. I want to know in the present economic situation which field is good to choose for MBA course ; MBA course in Finance or MBA course in IB? (Manoj Khatri , Hyderabad) Well, that is a tricky question. Whatever economic situation it might be, I would suggest taking decision in the following manner for these questions: Where your heart lies (what interests you)-what is strength of your institute and faculty (what brand it carries in the market)-what jobs are going to be available in near future (though it’s difficult to predict, but you may know how the industry or target companies are moving). I hope this advice coupled with advice from teachers and mentors around you will help you take effective decision regarding the MBA course. (Answered by Mr. Showick Thorpe, Owner, V&S Thorpes Education Inc.) I have appeared in all MBA exam and I got good %ile in MAT and XAT 2010. Now I want to take admission in good MBA college for ursuing an MBA course in Mumbai or Pune. I couldn’t give best performance in GD n PI. So what do I do now?) (Taruna Nagori , Chittorgarh, Rajasthan) Hi Taruna, if your performance in XAT 09 and MAT 09 are good as you say, I suggest check if there are any good institutes that are still accepting the applications for admissions in Mumbai and Pune for MBA course. You could still give it a try. In the eventuality of not securing an admission, I suggest try next year, but meanwhile you should pick up a job or do something productive and not sit at home. (Answered by Mr. R. Shiva Kumar, Director, R&D-Career Launcher) Respected Sir, I have completed my B.com degree in 2008, landing into an MBA course. is my ambition, but my Maths and English is not so good, I want to secure highest percentile in CAT 2010. How should I improve myself to get a highest percentile. (Prasad , Belgaum) Dear Prasad, to improve Maths, you will need to strong fundamentals and regular practice. You may be aware that that the level of Maths is not high in CAT but you need good comprehension and application skills. Try to solve as many questions as possible mentally without writing anything to improve your speed. To improve English, please regularly read books preferably non-fiction which can build your comprehension as well as vocabulary. Read on diverse subjects and write a precis of what you read to test your understanding. You may refer to Michael Swan Practical English Usage to improve and grammar and usage. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi) Hello Sir, I am an engineering graduate and I am placed in Infosys with 2.5 lacs package, as the package is very low and the job is not interesting me. What should I do? Should I join or prepare for entrance exams for an MBA course? I still have few months. Would I be able to do in few months? What is the right thing to do? My age is 24. (Deveraj , Bhopal) Hi. Please allow me to throw at you answer to your question, bundled with another questions. Answer is , if you are not happy with your present situation, you must try for MBA entrance exam. Bundled question is Why an MBA course? Why not to look at other tests/careers too. You can do a PG (M.E./M.Sc.) in your subject, or try hand (of course, along with MBA tests) at tests such as Bank PO, SSC/UPSC, GATE, GRE etc. As far your age, please feel free to aspire as you are definitely not at the edge at all. If you complete your MBA course and enter industry at age of 26-27 years, that’s still great. Many engineering graduates enter B-schools after 3-5 years of work-experience and are accepted in the industry at the premium over a fresher. Hello Sir, I am preparingto get into an MBA course. I have forgotten what I did earlier in maths and vocabulary? So, kindly suggest me what can I do? (Sumit , Ranchi)

Hi Sumit, I wish I had a magic pill to solve your problem. If Vocabulary is poor, it would hamper your performance in the verbal section for sure. Now as far as Maths is concerned have forgotten could be a way of saying  haven’t practiced much. There is no short cut to either of your problems. You must spend time with your books and study in order to make it to a MBA course in a top notch MBA college.(Answered by Mr. R. Shiva Kumar, Director, R&D-Career Launcher)

Dear sir, I am doing Bachelor Of Business Management from Bangalore currently in 2rd year(4th semester) I want to know what is the best time to start for preparation for an MBA course and which option is better either to study for an MBA degree here or abroad. Please help me out sir (Manish Sankhla , Bangalore)

Dear Manish, For doing an MBA course in India, you should start preparing right now for CAT  and other MBA entrance exams. I presume that you are now in pre-final year and will complete your BBM in 2010. For an MBA course from abroad, good B-schools in USA need 16 years of education and work experience of more than a couple of years. B-schools in Australia and UK are less stringent. For US, you will have to write GMAT and it will be a good idea to prepare for it rite it now since the score is valid for five years. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi)

Dear Sir, I m B.Sc Agri graduate 32 yr old & having 8 yrs of work experience in Agri input marketing, out of which 3 yrs managerial cadre with 5 lacs package per annum. Now I wanted to go for one yr MBA course from IIM or any other equivalent institute. I have decided to go for CAT preparation this year to get MBA admission in coming academic year in MBA course. Kindly guide me, how to prepare for the CAT/GMAT exams. (Basavaraddi , Karnataka)

Dear Basavradddi, You will need to prepare well in areas of Mathematics, Logical Ability and English. You may start either by buying books available in the market for CAT preparation or by joining a coaching institute. Strong fundamentals, ability to apply the same and good time management are important in cracking CAT. Since the competition to get into IIMs is intense, you need to benchmark yourself to understand your relative strengths & weaknesses and target a percentile rank of 99+ which will be the range to achieve admission into an MBA course in IIMs. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi)

What is the weight age of hobbies towards preparation for an MBA course. Is it necessary to develop one as part of said preparation? How much time should be dedicated towards this? (Harish , Pune)

Dear Harish, it is not mandatory that you need a hobby to get into a good MBA college. You are expected to have a good understanding of what is happening around you and an ability to look at these events in a logical and analytical manner. Please do not try to develop a hobby just because you feel it matters in getting into a good MBA college for an MBA course. (Answered by Mr. Ulhas Vairagkar, Director, T.I.M.E, Delhi)

Everything of an MBA course answered by MBA experts on MBAUniverse.com

Dear Naresh, a lot of students with backgrounds similar to yours are going towards MBA course with time for preparation being the most prominent roadblock in their progress. However, there is no solution for the same  you will need to make time for better preparation. I hope you understand that it is important to pursue your MBA course from one the best MBA college if you want it to influence your career. Getting into the top B-Schools for an MBA course is a demanding task and would require you to put in a lot of efforts. For candidates with work experience, we suggest them to normally either look for the normal 2 year full time MBA course abroad or look at an 1 year full time executive MBA course within India. The IIMs, ISB, SP Jain etc. are some of the top B-Schools in India that offer the 1 year MBA degree program. Best method to choose an MBA course , college or even the test to take, is to decide what you want in your future .This may include money, work profile, company you want to work with, work location etc. Once this is clear, we can always figure out the path you need to take to achieve the same. It is like this: if you know your destination, the route you take will not matter, but if you do not know your destination, any route you take will not help. All the best!! (Answered by Mr Gejo Srinivasan, MBA Product Head, IMS Learning Center)

Dear sir, I am currently preparing for my C.A final exam ,after which I would like to go for an MBA course. I am also doing an internship now. Would taking CAT 2010 be ideal for me? I would also like to know if self study is sufficient or if I should take up some classes? Thanks (Shoba , Chennai)

If you want to go in for an MBA course immediately after taking your CA Final exams (and you are confident of clearing them), then you should ideally aim for CAT 2010. Whether self-study is sufficient or whether you need to attend classroom coaching depends purely on your capabilities, vis--vis CAT. If you are fundamentally weak in some area or the other, then it definitely makes sense to go in for classroom coaching. Preparing in a group with other students who are working towards a similar goal is also an advantage of classroom coaching. However, even if you are planning to go for self-study, I would advise you to get hold of correspondence material and mock test-series from a reputed coaching institute so that your preparation for CAT is focused. (Answered by Mr Rishiraj Dasgupta, Career Launcher)

Dear Sir, please tell me how I can get into Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) for an MBA course. What are the important things required for it. Thanks)  (Kanhu Kuldip , Orissa)

For a seat in IIMs for an MBA course, one needs to write the All India entrance examination named CAT. If one clears the requirements as demanded by the individual IIMs in the written exam and along with other factors like work experience (if any) and academic performance in Xth, XIIth and Graduation, one is called for GD and interview by the respective IIMs separately for which one has qualified. Then depending upon the performances in GD/PI one is finally selected for IIMs for persuing an MBA degree. Last year around 1.8 lac people appeared in the CAT written test out of which approx 2700 students got calls for GD/PI by the IIMs. You have to take holistic preparation for the CAT examination because that is the biggest hurdle. You need to score 99 percentile or above to ensure a call from IIMs with equally good performance in all the three sections of CAT for making into MBA course.
