Dusshera is considered one of the most important Indian festivals. It is also called Vijay Dashmi as on this auspicious day, the good was victorious over the evil. The festival marks the beginning of a new harvesting season for the farmers. Dusshera is celebrated in the lunar month of Ashwin. Goddess durga is worshipped and her Statues are submerged in the water.

The Indian festivals brings along with it many stories and beliefs which we all have been hearing since our childhood. The most famous one is that of the victory of Lord Ram over the demon, Ravana. The mythology story says that on this day Lord Ram defeated and killed Ravana because he had abducted Ram’s wife Sita. It is said that Lord Rama prayed to goddess Durga, and with the secret she gave him, he was able to kill Ravana. During the time of the festival huge idols of Ravana , his brother Kumbhkaran and his son, Meghnath are set on fire, to mark the victory of the Lord. As well as these Indian festivals is also famous due to a lot of astrology aspect.

The other story that is associated with the festival is that of the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasur. The story goes like this that a demon by the name of Mahishasur created havoc on earth. With his support many demons defeated many gods. Finally all the gods collected to create a single power, and this was created in the form of Goddess Durga. The Goddess was bestowed with all the special weapons from all the gods. Then, Durga with all the weapons in her ten hands, riding on a Lion, fought with the devil, Mahishasur. The battle continued for nine days and nights and ultimately, on the tenth day the evil demon Mahishasur was defeated and killed by the Goddess.

The third mythological tale associated with Dusshera is that after Pandavas lost to their cousins, Kauravas in the game of Dice, they were sent to 12 years of exile in forest followed by one year of hidden exile. Pandavas spent 12 years in forest and after this before completing the last year they had hidden their weapons in a hole on a tree. After the completion of that year on Vijaya Dashmi they are said to take the weapons from the tree and told their true identity.

Thus with so many stories about the festival, Dusshera is celebrated in all parts of India with their own defined meaning.
