Commonwealth Games 2010 – a prestige issue of Delhi

Tags: , , , , ,

In a bid to mark its presence on the world’s sporting stage, India bid and won the right to host the common wealth games in 2010. This will be the largest sporting event hosted by Delhi till date, and has therefore become something of a prestige issue for the government.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games is also marked by the fact that it will be the costliest Commonwealth Games ever with an estimated budget of 1.6billion dollars. The Delhi government is, predictably, working hard to complete all the preparations before the games begin.

To improve travel and transportation facility before the Commonwealth Games 2010 the government has modernized its airport and is currently in the process of modernizing the railways station. It has also upgraded it bus terminal and introduced new and better buses.

It has made the Metro rail project corporation work overtime so that it is completed before time. In recent months the pressure to complete before the Commonwealth Games 2010 has resulted in several disasters on the Metro site also.
The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to begin at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, but a huge village called the Commonwealth Games Village is coming up on the banks of the river Yamuna. The games village will house not only the games stadium but the quarters for the athletes too.

While preparing for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi is also trying to get rid of some of its most perennial problems. It is increasing it power generation capacity to deal with chronic power shortages, and widening roads, constructing flyovers and bridges to end jams on its arterial roads.

There have been some concerns in the media that the preparations for the games would not be completed in time, but in 2008 visiting Commonwealth Games Federation chief expressed his satisfaction with the progress in the preparations.
The Commonwealth Games are expected to give a boost to India’s tourism industry, but many complain that the benefits do not justify the huge expenditure.

Some are also apprehensive about the security challenge that organizing an event on such a huge scale would entail especially for a terror attack prone country like India.

The population of the city is already large at around 15 million, the additional influx of tourists during the Commonwealth Games is expected to put a stain on the already strained infrastructure of the city.

The apex committee for the conduct of the Commonwealth Games would be headed by India’s sport’s minister, while the organizing committee would be headed by the Indian Olympics President Suresh Kalmadi.
