Whenever someone talks about Stock Market in India the first thing that strikes our mind are National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange or their indexes NIFTY and SENSEX respectively. Both of these Stock Exchanges work on telecommunications network. People are not on a floor of the exchange matching buy and sell orders on behalf of investors. Instead, trading takes place directly between investors and their buyers or sellers, who are the market makers, through an elaborate system of companies electronically connected to one another.

A Stock Exchange, Share Exchange or Bourse is a marketplace in which securities, commodities, derivatives and other financial instruments are traded. The core function of a stock exchange is to ensure fair and orderly trading, as well as efficient dissemination of price information for any securities trading on that exchange. Exchanges give companies, governments and other groups a platform to sell securities to the investing public. An exchange may be a physical location where traders meet to conduct business or an electronic platform. Presently there are 24 stock exchanges in India, out of which 20 have exchanges including National Stock Exchange (NSE), Over The Counter Exchange of India Ltd. (OTCEI) and Inter-Connected Stock Exchange of India Limited (ISE) have nationwide trading facilities.

National Stock Exchange (NSE) was incorporated on November 1992 and got recognition as a stock exchange on April 1993. On the other hand the other most popular stock exchange of India i.e., Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) which is the oldest stock exchange in Asia got recognition in 1956, although it was established in the year 1875 as “The Native Share & Stock Brokers’ Association”.

Both of these Stock Exchanges in India are providing online trading facility through which you can even trade by sitting in the comfort of your home but have you ever wondered how do these facilities are made available to you.

Let us take the example of NSE, its IT set-up is the largest by any company in India. It has played a catalytic role in reforming the Indian securities market in terms of market practices and trading volume. To facilitate trading and effectively meet and manage the requirements of increased users from around 200 cities spread all over the country. NSE uses NEAT a client-server based application. At the server end, all trading information is stored in an in-memory database to achieve minimum response time and maximum system availability for users. The trading server software runs on a fault tolerant STRATUS main frame computer while the client software runs under Windows on PCs.

The telecommunications network which was using X.25 protocol and is the backbone of the automated trading system is being upgraded to use the more popular and modern IP protocol. Each trading member trades in the NSE with other members through a PC located in the trading member’s office, anywhere in India. The trading members on the various market segments are linked to the central computer at the NSE through dedicatedleased lines and dedicated VSAT terminals.

NSE is one of the largest interactive VSAT based stock exchanges in the world. Today it supports more than 2000 VSATs and 3000 leased lines across the country. The NSE- network is the largest private wide area network in the country and the first extended C- Band VSAT network in the world. Currently more than 9000 users are trading on the real time-online NSE application.
